Some good..some ba - ABSOLUTELY DREADFUL!

Hello again..how are y'all? Hopefully you've been enjoying the sunshine at the lake, the beach, the cottage or the patio ... in real or miniature. I'm still plugging along trying to get done all the projects I foolishly committed to then promptly ignored till 2 months before our show. Well slowly but surely I'm making progress and as suggested some is good and some is downright ridiculous. I'll show you all and you tell me if I should just give up now :)

The assortment of goods I've made as options for my cart (we'll see what fits :)) I really like how the apple torte, banana custard puddings and cherry crumble in a cup turned out.

My pies generally turned out all right. Here is pumpkin and key lime, strawberry and blueberry..

Cherry turnovers, cherry chip shortbread and strawberry rhubarb love pie.
Peach is one of my favourites...

Macaroons, cupcakes, bunny and Venus shortbread with CAKE POPS!!! These were all fine..here's where I start to go wrong: Fruit and veggies! This is my first time trying all:

Oranges by LugArt...Peaches and papayas aren't too bad although they both crumbled..(low heat me thinks..) but the cucs and (choke) watermelon is horrible:
So a few steps forward and a few back..Oh how I wish I could go to a guild school or some real mini workshops but here in Edmonton Alberta Canada there is pretty much nothing. Sigh. How am I gonna get better??? Practise I guess. So I'm going to continue trying the f$#@ts and veggies and I'm hoping they will all look better compiled together on the cart..a bit of an illusion..I hope. Wish me luck and leave some advice or feedback, I need it as you can see...

Mini hugs and BIG love. xo

  1. I have no doubt you'll figure out the veggies and fruits. I mean all the sweets are out of this world. Maybe you were just tired by the time you got to them. But I have to tell you that all of it is better than I could ever do! You're just too hard on yourself. Those yummies make me sooooo hungry! Gorgeous stuff!

  4. Don't give up Natasha. If there is one thing i know it is that you will get better and better. It takes time to get your mini making where you want it to be and that is important to remember. Too many want everything to be easy but I'm here to say it takes time and practice like any talent but so worth it. Mini hugs~ Kim

    1. Your words are so true Kim. Thank you for what you said here and on facebook, I take your advice to heart. I'm just scared that some people are born for this and things seem to come easy for some, whereI have to work my butt off for one good piece. I just don't want to get my hopes up or try this hard to fail but that's the risk you take (among many) when you try to do what you love. And I do love mini's. So I'm going to keep working (and learning) at it and try to be an original and maybe one day I'll be able to sell my work too! What do you think of my name: Eat Cake Miniatures ... Sigh* xo

  6. Don't give up, Natasha! Fruits and veggies are the hardest in miniature because there's really no room for error--you just know if it's off, whereas with cakes that's not so much the case.

Just be sure you use lots of translucent clay. You could also try slicing your melon/cukes after you bake them, but while they're still warm--just use a very sharp blade, and if they get cool and start crumbling, pop them back into the oven.

    Good luck!

  7. Your tarts, cakes and puddings are fabulous! Maybe the fruit and veggies need some work but why bother? Life is too short to stress over a clay cucumber! Make what you enjoy making and you'll feel good! I steer clear from making fruit and veggies and also flowers, if I need any I buy them or swap. Good luck with the fair! Gill x
